American University offers degrees on eminent Ugandans, among them was Dr. William Muhairwe to be honoured with Professorship.

Nine prominent Ugandan personalities on Sunday received honorary doctorate and professorships in recognition of their dedicated career contribution towards positive change in the country. According to Professor Clyde Rivers, the chief chancellor of United Graduate College and Seminary, the awards are in recognition of accomplishments the awardees have selflessly fulfilled in their careers. He said the awards should provide stimulus for Africans to start thinking the African way so as to develop their continent by celebrating accomplishments that have helped change the lives of fellow Africans.

“This is a new day for Africa. All the resources in Africa must develop Africa. It is time for brain drain to end and brain gain to stay. The rich are rich because they have the correct information while the poor are poor because they have the wrong information,” Prof Rivers said. “It is time for the educated to preach the right ideas to the less educated, time for Africans to write their own story not to be written by other people.” Dr Boney Katatumba and Dr Charles Mbire both received an honorary doctorates in business administration for their service to humanity and business development in Africa. Dr William Muhairwe’s leadership and dedication to bring the best among others and support to the disadvantaged was meanwhile recognised with a professorship.

There was also an award for Dr Theresa Mbire, the mother of businessman Charles, who got an honorary doctorate for her contribution to local women entrepreneurship and excellence in community service. Pastors Robert and Jessica Kayanja also received doctorates of divinity for their demonstration of faith in God and contribution towards the growth of the church worldwide. Jessica was recognised for pioneering economic empowerment of women in self help projects.

Former Kampala Mayor John Sebana Kizito got a doctorate in governance for his leadership and committed service to Kampala City Council. Other personalities to pick up doctorates included Mr Anatoli Kamugisha for his entrepreneurial acumen and excellent leadership, while Mr Tom Buruku was recognised for his excellent service to the disadvantaged communities within the country. Some of the African leaders who have received such awards from the same college are former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Mozambican President Joachim Chisano, President Museveni and his wife Janet and Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo and his wife Simone.

Others are Burundi President Pierre Nkunrunzira and his better half Denise, Kenyan Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and the Speaker of Kenya’s National Assembly Dr Kenneth Marende. Dr Mbire is the chairman of telecommunication giants MTN (U) Ltd whereas Professor Muhairwe, who already holds a doctorate in management from Germany is the managing director of National Water and Sewerage Corporation.
